Eburu Adekunle Annual symposium on Innovation in City Governance and Monarchy is an annual symposium that brings together stakeholders of the traditional city governance system in Africa, with the aim of meeting the challenges of accommodating and responding to a rapidly changing needs of the community and simultaneously exemplifying good governance despite meagre resources and lack of constitutional power.
And
Launching of Eburu Adekunle Initiative for Traditional Rulers’ intervention on Truancy Prevention, School Enrollment and Engagement is an approach developed on how truancy issue could be addressed and how disciplinary actions could be taking upon the guilt individuals in the school environment and in the community at large.
The symposium will address factors that drive truancy which exist at multiple levels (child, family, school, community). Given that, the most effective prevention and intervention measures leverage a multi-level approach. It is believed that Multi-level interventions are important because they highlight the need for a strong partnership between the school and other stakeholders in order to better address the complex causes of truancy.
It is worrisome to note that students tend to face a lot of emotional and psychological problems arising from irregular school attendance, lack of personal and interpersonal skills to cope with school work.
The symposium will address how truants have negative perception about schooling and how it interferes with their freedom as they prefer to spend most of their time with friends?. Meanwhile from cultural perspective, when a child fails to attend school, the parents are usually blamed. However many students struggle with personal issues that relate to lack of personal, interpersonal and problem solving skills, which manifest as behavioural problems that could most likely result to truancy.
The symposium will also address how truants suffer from deprivation, isolation, rejection and unassertiveness, which is due to their inability to cope with social, cognitive and problems-solving skills. How some of them are bullied hence they decide to be absent from school unk nown to their parents and the school authority.
Above all a model will be created which is Project START (Stop Truancy And Recommend Treatment). Project START will be implemented in the school environment and the goal would be to promote a collaborative relationship between schools, community organizations, social services, and courts.
Another issue that will be address is symplifying communication, simplifying the communication in the sense that families would receive attendance on how their children attends school which can help to reduce chronic absenteeism. Communication should convey a belief that families are vital and influential partners in their child’s education and should equip them with the accurate and timely information they need to fulfill their role. Standard letters however are typically too long, hard to understand, full of legal terms and can be perceived as threatening.
The speakers will use theories, case studies and best practices to discuss the significant challenges of truancy and how it affect academic performance of the students and the possible solutions. They will share their experiences on how truancy could be curb, school enrollment and engagement.
The 2022 symposium, to be held in Iba, State of Osun, Nigeria at Iyaniwura Palace, Iba. on 24th December, 2022, is in the process of receiving nominations for prospective participants.
