Theme: Revitalization of Rural Communities and Small Towns
Globally, there has been numerous gatherings and research on ways to contribute to the growth of rural community and small towns’ sustainability. This is however not common in Africa and most especially Nigeria where there is little or no forum where issues that bothers on rural areas and community development are discussed. The Rural Population in Nigeria is about 50% which signifies that the rural areas and its sustainability should be of utmost concern to all of us to bring about real development to the country at large. Rural is beautiful and powerful, it can feed and grow the whole nation but it cannot develop herself unless innovative ways and approach are employed.
Rural areas and small towns seem neglected in this part of the world with basic amenities and facilities lacking. The trends is replicated across the country and beyond which raises three basic questions in the mind of community development experts, practitioners, the academia, rural development specialists and researchers interested in rural areas. How can we revitalize our communities? What can be done to bring urban to rural? What are those innovative ways that can be employed to bring about development and sustainability to small town and rural communities? There is an urgency to keep pace with the innovative practices in community development globally and its benefits while also addressing possible areas to create new opportunities for positive social change.
